We were deeply touched by the overwhelming response to our recent How to Write a Legacy Letter workshop. Tables were full of eager
(and somewhat nervous) people —sometimes with multiple generations sitting side by side—ready to explore one of the most personal and
meaningful gifts a person can leave behind: their words.
Thank you to Ryan Collier of Collier Law for speaking and for cosponsoring this special event. Sharing the personal story of his father, who never got around to writing a letter to his loved ones, reminded us all just how treasured such a letter would be—especially once it’s too late to write one.
Guided gently but firmly by Mark Bain, we explored what a legacy letter is—and just as importantly, what it is not. As he stressed, “This is not a will or trust, it is your heartfelt words for someone you love. Something you want to leave for them to
treasure forever.”
Attendees were invited to begin the writing process right then and there, using eight simple, thoughtful prompts that made the task feel less daunting. Mark explained each section and then provided time for them to write down their own thoughts and ideas. Many were moved to tears as they began to write—proof of the deep connections these letters are meant to honor.
The response? Overwhelmingly positive. We heard again and again: “This is exactly what I’ve been needing.” Attendees shared that they had long wanted to write letters to their loved ones, but they didn’t know where to begin. This event gave them not
just clarity—but the courage to start.
We’re grateful for everyone who attended and shared this beautiful experience with us. We hope to offer another Legacy Letter event in the future—and we’d be honored to present this meaningful topic to other organizations or community groups.
